Sometimes, wearing contact lenses for long periods of time can cause irritated and itchy eyes. This is not an uncommon problem, with most contact wearers experiencing the problem at some point. The main thing you must be sure not to do, is sleep in your contacts. It causes dry eyes, making them irritable and itchy and could have long-term effects. It is also vitally important that you care for your contact lenses properly by following the maintenance and replacement schedule. If they are not correctly maintained, problems with the lenses, your vision and comfort can occur.
If you have a sense of discomfort after you have administered the contact lenses or your eyes have started to feel irritated or scratchy remove the contacts immediately. It could be because the contact lenses aren’t thoroughly clean and dirt has collected in them. Wash the lense thoroughly to remove any traces of dirt and reinsert it. If the problem persists remove the lenses and contact your optician. However, if the lense looks like it could be broken or damaged don’t put it back in your eye and seek assistance.
Contact
lenses shouldn’t be the cause of dry or irritated eyes unless you have been
sleeping in them. Dry eyes are usually caused by insufficient tears produced,
if you suffer from dry eyes ensure they are treated before you insert your contact
lenses to avoid minimal irritation. Talk to your optician when you are
receiving your contact lense if you have any concerns.
Your eye specialist may administer you special eye drops or eye moisturizer to soothe your eyes if they are dry or irritated. Ensure the drops they prescribe or recommend are suitable to use with your contact lenses.
Natural eye drops are the easiest way to treat irritated eyes. Eye drops that contain chemicals can be harmful to the user if used for extended time periods. Artificial tears lubricate the eye, abolishing the itchy eyes. This is very rarely solved by one use of the drops, but after a week eyes should be restored to their normal health. However, before you start using the eye drops check with a professional that they are suitable to use with your type of contact lense.
If using the specialist eye drops or other treatments haven’t cured your dry eyes it might be because your irritated eyes haven’t been caused by your contact lenses. Environmental factors such as dust can cause irritated eyes as well as allergies such as hay fever.
